The Great Mirror Ball Dot Search.

>> Wednesday, April 7, 2010

There were 2 fabrics that started it all. Michael Miller's Mirror Ball dot fabric in Rice and Toffee. We got them in the store this summer and I have loved them ever since. I went searching for others a while back, just to find out there were 40 of these fabulous fabrics, all of which are not in production anymore. Oh the humanity! I couldn't believe they weren't making these wonderful fabrics anymore! I happened to google Mirror Ball dot and came up with this picture:

Aren't they just fabulous!? A whole kit!

I truly believe they were ahead of their time two years ago when they line came out. Now, I have started the great mirror ball dot search, looking to purchase all 40 colors. I don't know what I am going to do with them yet, but I know I need to get them before they can no longer be found. I even went so far as to call Michael Miller to see if they had ANY in their back stock. No Luck. No yardage. No FQ kits. Nothing. So I have been purchasing 1/2 yard cuts and plan to do something fabulous with them, I just don't know yet. Actually, it's becoming a little bit of an obsession. No really, I even have my screen background on my laptop this photo:

Since I didn't know the names of all the prints, I had to order them and try to match them with this picture, making sure not to overlap any prints I already had. I started naming the ones I do have on this photo as a way to keep track. (see I told you, obsessed) I got about half of them, before I realized a few of them would be hard to find. I went ahead and contacted Mark Hordyszynski to see if he had any he could sell me. Nothing. Boy these prints are really hard to find. He even told me he was going back to his hometown and might have some in storage. No luck again. I was completely on my own to search for them one by one and purchase whatever I could find from wherever I could find it. I decided if I was going to find them all, then I needed the color cards to finish the rest. So, I called Michael Miller and had them pull out the old SKU's and send me the sheets. I also told the lady about my theory of being ahead of their time. She politely agreed, and I'm sure nothing will come of it. What a bummer! This is what I have so far:

I read on a blog post somewhere that a quilt store in Washington had a quilt made completely of the mirror balls, but they closed a year ago so I couldn't contact anyone to see what they had done. They only thing I could come up with was this small picture of a wall hanging:

I have a better idea. I wanted to capture the flow of the fabric, so with the dots being round I thought about this quilt pattern from Carolina Patchworks called Golden Waves:

I am not sure yet what I am going to do, but I know I am going to keep collecting them! I'll let you know how this one finishes...The Great Mirror Ball Dot Search of 2010.

I found them! If you are looking for FQ sets...they are available here.

Aloha!

Mark here! Nice to see your obsession, LOL! To let you know, I and Michael Miller Fabrics will be re-releasing Mirror Ball Dot this year. We're including the best seller from the original collection and adding lots of new and fresh colors! A small group of 5 colors will be on the MMF website soon, with the remainder to hopefully follow this summer.

Thanks for your support!

Mark

Hi Steffani! We have something in common. : ) MBD to be specific. I came across your post quite a while back when I was first seeking out yardage of MBD fabrics online. It was nice to see that I wasn't the only superfan out there. ; ) Just recently I posted about my MBD stash, too. I found out pretty quickly that there's great MBD news on the horizon!
